ICD (KOSDAQ:040910) shareholders are up 10% this past week, but still in the red over the last five years
It's nice to see the ICD Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:040910) share price up 10% in a week. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last half decade have been stomach churning. Indeed, the share price is down a whopping 73% in that time. The recent bounce might mean the long decline is over, but we are not confident. The important question is if the business itself justifies a higher share price in the long term.
On a more encouraging note the company has added ₩7.1b to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the five-year loss for shareholders.

ICD wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.
In the last five years ICD saw its revenue shrink by 18% per year. That puts it in an unattractive cohort, to put it mildly. So it's not altogether surprising to see the share price down 12% per year in the same time period. We don't think this is a particularly promising picture. Ironically, that behavior could create an opportunity for the contrarian investor - but only if there are good reasons to predict a brighter future.

A Different Perspective
While the broader market lost about 6.9% in the twelve months, ICD shareholders did even worse, losing 48% (even including dividends). Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 11% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand ICD better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that ICD is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those doesn't sit too well with us...
