For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Samsung BiologicsLtd (KRX:207940). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

Samsung BiologicsLtd's Improving Profits

In the last three years Samsung BiologicsLtd's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like the last firework on New Year's Eve accelerating into the sky, Samsung BiologicsLtd's EPS shot from ₩3,147 to ₩5,371, over the last year. You don't see 71% year-on-year growth like that, very often. That could be a sign that the business has reached a true inflection point.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Samsung BiologicsLtd shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 13% to 28%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Samsung BiologicsLtd Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a ₩50t company like Samsung BiologicsLtd. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they hold ₩37b worth of its stock. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Even though that's only about 0.07% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. For companies with market capitalizations over ₩9.0t, like Samsung BiologicsLtd, the median CEO pay is around ₩1.8b.

Samsung BiologicsLtd offered total compensation worth ₩1.1b to its CEO in the year to . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when its reasonable that does give me a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.

Should You Add Samsung BiologicsLtd To Your Watchlist?

Samsung BiologicsLtd's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. The sweetener is that insiders have a mountain of stock, and the CEO remuneration is quite reasonable. The strong EPS improvement suggests the businesses is humming along. Samsung BiologicsLtd certainly ticks a few of my boxes, so I think it's probably well worth further consideration.
