Celltrion, Inc.'s (KRX:068270) Has Performed Well But Fundamentals Look Varied: Is There A Clear Direction For The Stock?
Celltrion's (KRX:068270) stock is up by 6.6% over the past three months. However, we decided to study the company's mixed-bag of fundamentals to assess what this could mean for future share prices, as stock prices tend to be aligned with a company's long-term financial performance. Specifically, we decided to study Celltrion's ROE in this article.
Return on equity or ROE is a key measure used to assess how efficiently a company's management is utilizing the company's capital. Simply put, it is used to assess the profitability of a company in relation to its equity capital.
How Is ROE Calculated?
ROE can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Celltrion is:
4.4% = ₩739b ÷ ₩17t (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2025).
The 'return' is the yearly profit. Another way to think of that is that for every ₩1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn ₩0.04 in profit.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?
We have already established that ROE serves as an efficient profit-generating gauge for a company's future earnings. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.
A Side By Side comparison of Celltrion's Earnings Growth And 4.4% ROE
As you can see, Celltrion's ROE looks pretty weak. Not just that, even compared to the industry average of 6.8%, the company's ROE is entirely unremarkable. For this reason, Celltrion's five year net income decline of 3.8% is not surprising given its lower ROE. We reckon that there could also be other factors at play here. For instance, the company has a very high payout ratio, or is faced with competitive pressures.
So, as a next step, we compared Celltrion's performance against the industry and were disappointed to discover that while the company has been shrinking its earnings, the industry has been growing its earnings at a rate of 23% over the last few years.
The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Is A068270 fairly valued? This infographic on the company's intrinsic value has everything you need to know.
Is Celltrion Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
Looking at its three-year median payout ratio of 31% (or a retention ratio of 69%) which is pretty normal, Celltrion's declining earnings is rather baffling as one would expect to see a fair bit of growth when a company is retaining a good portion of its profits. It looks like there might be some other reasons to explain the lack in that respect. For example, the business could be in decline.
Moreover, Celltrion has been paying dividends for four years, which is a considerable amount of time, suggesting that management must have perceived that the shareholders prefer consistent dividends even though earnings have been shrinking. Our latest analyst data shows that the future payout ratio of the company is expected to drop to 14% over the next three years. As a result, the expected drop in Celltrion's payout ratio explains the anticipated rise in the company's future ROE to 7.4%, over the same period.
Conclusion
Overall, we have mixed feelings about Celltrion. While the company does have a high rate of reinvestment, the low ROE means that all that reinvestment is not reaping any benefit to its investors, and moreover, its having a negative impact on the earnings growth. Having said that, looking at current analyst estimates, we found that the company's earnings growth rate is expected to see a huge improvement.
