NAVER (KRX:035420) Seems To Use Debt Rather Sparingly
Howard Marks put it nicely when he said that, rather than worrying about share price volatility, 'The possibility of permanent loss is the risk I worry about... and every practical investor I know worries about.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. We note that NAVER Corporation (KRX:035420) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Of course, debt can be an important tool in businesses, particularly capital heavy businesses. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.
What Is NAVER's Debt?
As you can see below, NAVER had ₩3.46t of debt at September 2025, down from ₩3.88t a year prior. But it also has ₩8.61t in cash to offset that, meaning it has ₩5.15t net cash.
How Strong Is NAVER's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that NAVER had liabilities of ₩8.08t due within a year, and liabilities of ₩3.90t falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of ₩8.61t and ₩54.2b worth of receivables due within a year. So it has liabilities totalling ₩3.31t more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
Given NAVER has a humongous market capitalization of ₩36t, it's hard to believe these liabilities pose much threat. Having said that, it's clear that we should continue to monitor its balance sheet, lest it change for the worse. While it does have liabilities worth noting, NAVER also has more cash than debt, so we're pretty confident it can manage its debt safely.

Also good is that NAVER grew its EBIT at 16% over the last year, further increasing its ability to manage debt. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine NAVER's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.
Finally, a company can only pay off debt with cold hard cash, not accounting profits. While NAVER has net cash on its balance sheet, it's still worth taking a look at its ability to convert earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to free cash flow, to help us understand how quickly it is building (or eroding) that cash balance. During the last three years, NAVER generated free cash flow amounting to a very robust 93% of its EBIT, more than we'd expect. That positions it well to pay down debt if desirable to do so.
Summing Up
We could understand if investors are concerned about NAVER's liabilities, but we can be reassured by the fact it has has net cash of ₩5.15t. The cherry on top was that in converted 93% of that EBIT to free cash flow, bringing in ₩2.1t. So we don't think NAVER's use of debt is risky. Above most other metrics, we think its important to track how fast earnings per share is growing, if at all. If you've also come to that realization, you're in luck, because today you can view this interactive graph of NAVER's earnings per share history for free.
