Earnings are growing at Pearl Abyss (KOSDAQ:263750) but shareholders still don't like its prospects
It is doubtless a positive to see that the Pearl Abyss Corp. (KOSDAQ:263750) share price has gained some 36% in the last three months. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been less than pleasing. After all, the share price is down 18% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.
Since Pearl Abyss has shed ₩98b from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Although the share price is down over three years, Pearl Abyss actually managed to grow EPS by 2.4% per year in that time. This is quite a puzzle, and suggests there might be something temporarily buoying the share price. Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.
It looks to us like the market was probably too optimistic around growth three years ago. However, taking a look at other business metrics might shed a bit more light on the share price action.
We think that the revenue decline over three years, at a rate of 7.1% per year, probably had some shareholders looking to sell. After all, if revenue keeps shrinking, it may be difficult to find earnings growth in the future.

A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 5.8% in the last year, Pearl Abyss shareholders lost 11%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 1.0% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Pearl Abyss better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - Pearl Abyss has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
