JYP Entertainment (KOSDAQ:035900) sheds 5.9% this week, as yearly returns fall more in line with earnings growth
JYP Entertainment Corporation (KOSDAQ:035900) shareholders have seen the share price descend 21% over the month. But in stark contrast, the returns over the last half decade have impressed. Indeed, the share price is up an impressive 182% in that time. We think it's more important to dwell on the long term returns than the short term returns. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's cheap now.
Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 5.9%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During five years of share price growth, JYP Entertainment achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 26% per year. This EPS growth is reasonably close to the 23% average annual increase in the share price. That suggests that the market sentiment around the company hasn't changed much over that time. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for JYP Entertainment the TSR over the last 5 years was 191%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
JYP Entertainment shareholders are down 13% over twelve months (even including dividends), which isn't far from the market return of -14%. The silver lining is that longer term investors would have made a total return of 24% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data remains strong, and the share price is simply down on sentiment, then this could be an opportunity worth investigating. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand JYP Entertainment better, we need to consider many other factors.
