If You Had Bought Bookook Steel (KRX:026940) Shares Three Years Ago You'd Have Earned 53% Returns
It hasn't been the best quarter for Bookook Steel Co., Ltd. (KRX:026940) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 18% in that time. But don't let that distract from the very nice return generated over three years. In fact, the company's share price bested the return of its market index in that time, posting a gain of 53%.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Over the last three years, Bookook Steel failed to grow earnings per share, which fell 40% (annualized). This was, in part, due to extraordinary items impacting earning in the last twelve months.
So we doubt that the market is looking to EPS for its main judge of the company's value. Therefore, we think it's worth considering other metrics as well.
The revenue drop of 4.7% is as underwhelming as some politicians. What's clear is that historic earnings and revenue aren't matching up with the share price action, very well. So you might have to dig deeper to get a grasp of the situation

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between Bookook Steel's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Dividends have been really beneficial for Bookook Steel shareholders, and that cash payout contributed to why its TSR of 59%, over the last 3 years, is better than the share price return.
A Different Perspective
Investors in Bookook Steel had a tough year, with a total loss of 19%, against a market gain of about 31%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 10% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Bookook Steel better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance.
