We believe investing is smart because history shows that stock markets go higher in the long term. But if you choose that path, you're going to buy some stocks that fall short of the market. Over the last year the Kukdo Chemical Co., Ltd. (KRX:007690) share price is up 26%, but that's less than the broader market return. Zooming out, the stock is actually down 11% in the last three years.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the last year, Kukdo Chemical actually saw its earnings per share drop 3.0%.

The mild decline in EPS may be a result of the fact that the company is more focused on other aspects of the business, right now. It makes sense to check some of the other fundamental data for an explanation of the share price rise.

Revenue was pretty stable on last year, so deeper research might be needed to explain the share price rise.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Kukdo Chemical's TSR for the last year was 30%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Kukdo Chemical provided a TSR of 30% over the last twelve months. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it's actually better than the average return of 1.5% over half a decade This suggests the company might be improving over time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Kukdo Chemical better, we need to consider many other factors.
