There's Reason For Concern Over Assems Inc.'s (KOSDAQ:136410) Massive 41% Price Jump

The Assems Inc. (KOSDAQ:136410) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 41%. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 75%.

Since its price has surged higher, Assems' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 17.2x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in Korea, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 13x and even P/E's below 7x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

Recent times have been quite advantageous for Assems as its earnings have been rising very briskly. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to beat most other companies over the coming period, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Assems would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 164% last year. As a result, it also grew EPS by 11% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been respectable for the company.

Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 29% shows it's noticeably less attractive on an annualised basis.

In light of this, it's alarming that Assems' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

The Key Takeaway

Assems' P/E is getting right up there since its shares have risen strongly. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Assems revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
