Many Would Be Envious Of Dongjin Semichem's (KOSDAQ:005290) Excellent Returns On Capital
Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. That's why when we briefly looked at Dongjin Semichem's (KOSDAQ:005290) ROCE trend, we were very happy with what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Dongjin Semichem is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.22 = ₩126b ÷ (₩961b - ₩399b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2020).
So, Dongjin Semichem has an ROCE of 22%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Chemicals industry average of 7.9%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
We'd be pretty happy with returns on capital like Dongjin Semichem. The company has employed 143% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 22%. Returns like this are the envy of most businesses and given it has repeatedly reinvested at these rates, that's even better. If these trends can continue, it wouldn't surprise us if the company became a multi-bagger.
On a side note, Dongjin Semichem has done well to reduce current liabilities to 42% of total assets over the last five years. This can eliminate some of the risks inherent in the operations because the business has less outstanding obligations to their suppliers and or short-term creditors than they did previously. Although because current liabilities are still 42%, some of that risk is still prevalent.
The Bottom Line
In summary, we're delighted to see that Dongjin Semichem has been compounding returns by reinvesting at consistently high rates of return, as these are common traits of a multi-bagger. And long term investors would be thrilled with the 482% return they've received over the last five years. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we still believe the stock deserves further research.
