Does Cosmax BTI (KRX:044820) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?
Howard Marks put it nicely when he said that, rather than worrying about share price volatility, 'The possibility of permanent loss is the risk I worry about... and every practical investor I know worries about.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. We note that Cosmax BTI, Inc. (KRX:044820) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
What Risk Does Debt Bring?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Of course, debt can be an important tool in businesses, particularly capital heavy businesses. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Cosmax BTI Carry?
As you can see below, Cosmax BTI had ₩408.1b of debt, at September 2020, which is about the same as the year before. You can click the chart for greater detail. However, because it has a cash reserve of ₩68.3b, its net debt is less, at about ₩339.7b.
How Strong Is Cosmax BTI's Balance Sheet?
We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Cosmax BTI had liabilities of ₩428.6b falling due within a year, and liabilities of ₩123.7b due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of ₩68.3b and ₩109.3b worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities total ₩374.7b more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.
This deficit casts a shadow over the ₩153.4b company, like a colossus towering over mere mortals. So we definitely think shareholders need to watch this one closely. At the end of the day, Cosmax BTI would probably need a major re-capitalization if its creditors were to demand repayment. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is Cosmax BTI's earnings that will influence how the balance sheet holds up in the future. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.
In the last year Cosmax BTI wasn't profitable at an EBIT level, but managed to grow its revenue by 15%, to ₩549b. That rate of growth is a bit slow for our taste, but it takes all types to make a world.
Caveat Emptor
Importantly, Cosmax BTI had an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss over the last year. To be specific the EBIT loss came in at ₩1.6b. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above make us nervous about the company. It would need to improve its operations quickly for us to be interested in it. But on the bright side the company actually produced a statutory profit of ₩4.5b and free cash flow of ₩12b. So there is definitely a chance that it can improve things in the next few years. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. These risks can be hard to spot. Every company has them, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for Cosmax BTI (of which 2 don't sit too well with us!) you should know about.
