Binggrae (KRX:005180) sheds 10% this week, as yearly returns fall more in line with earnings growth
It's been a soft week for Binggrae Co., Ltd. (KRX:005180) shares, which are down 10%. On the bright side the returns have been quite good over the last half decade. Its return of 66% has certainly bested the market return!
While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the five years of share price growth, Binggrae moved from a loss to profitability. That's generally thought to be a genuine positive, so investors may expect to see an increasing share price.
You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Binggrae, it has a TSR of 98% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Binggrae shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 60% over the last year. That's including the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 15% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time.
