When close to half the companies in Korea have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 15x, you may consider Nongshim Co., Ltd. (KRX:004370) as an attractive investment with its 11.6x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

Recent times have been pleasing for Nongshim as its earnings have risen in spite of the market's earnings going into reverse. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, possibly more than the market, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Nongshim's Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Nongshim would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 52% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 30% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 6.2% per annum as estimated by the twelve analysts watching the company. With the market predicted to deliver 22% growth per year, the company is positioned for a weaker earnings result.

In light of this, it's understandable that Nongshim's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On Nongshim's P/E

Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

As we suspected, our examination of Nongshim's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.

Having said that, be aware Nongshim is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis, you should know about.
