If You Had Bought TS' (KRX:001790) Shares Three Years Ago You Would Be Down 16%
While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the TS Corporation (KRX:001790) share price up 14% in a single quarter. But that doesn't help the fact that the three year return is less impressive. After all, the share price is down 16% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During five years of share price growth, TS moved from a loss to profitability. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. So given the share price is down it's worth checking some other metrics too.
With revenue flat over three years, it seems unlikely that the share price is reflecting the top line. There doesn't seem to be any clear correlation between the fundamental business metrics and the share price. That could mean that the stock was previously overrated, or it could spell opportunity now.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for TS the TSR over the last 3 years was -8.7%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
TS shareholders are up 6.9% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 4% per year over five year. It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand TS better, we need to consider many other factors. To that end, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with TS (including 1 which is is significant) .
