If You Had Bought LF's (KRX:093050) Shares Three Years Ago You Would Be Down 49%
As an investor its worth striving to ensure your overall portfolio beats the market average. But if you try your hand at stock picking, your risk returning less than the market. We regret to report that long term LF Corp. (KRX:093050) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 49% in three years, versus a market return of about 36%. It's up 3.1% in the last seven days.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
LF saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 18% per year, over the last three years. This fall in EPS isn't far from the rate of share price decline, which was 20% per year. So it seems that investor expectations of the company are staying pretty steady, despite the disappointment. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for LF the TSR over the last 3 years was -45%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
LF provided a TSR of 6.3% over the last twelve months. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 6% endured over half a decade. It could well be that the business is stabilizing. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
