The FILA Holdings (KRX:081660) Share Price Is Up 156% And Shareholders Are Boasting About It
The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For instance the FILA Holdings Corporation (KRX:081660) share price is 156% higher than it was three years ago. How nice for those who held the stock! It's also good to see the share price up 21% over the last quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 12% in 90 days).

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Over the last three years, FILA Holdings failed to grow earnings per share, which fell 45% (annualized).
Thus, it seems unlikely that the market is focussed on EPS growth at the moment. Therefore, we think it's worth considering other metrics as well.
The modest 0.5% dividend yield is unlikely to be propping up the share price. It may well be that FILA Holdings revenue growth rate of 11% over three years has convinced shareholders to believe in a brighter future. If the company is being managed for the long term good, today's shareholders might be right to hold on.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, FILA Holdings' TSR for the last 3 years was 159%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
FILA Holdings shareholders are down 18% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 32%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 18%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 1 warning sign for FILA Holdings that you should be aware of.
