Even With A 32% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding ENEX Co., LTD.'s (KRX:011090) Performance Completely

ENEX Co., LTD. (KRX:011090) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 32% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 51% in the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, there still wouldn't be many who think ENEX's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Korea's Consumer Durables industry is similar at about 0.4x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

What Does ENEX's Recent Performance Look Like?

For instance, ENEX's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the company to put the disappointing revenue performance behind them over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on ENEX's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like ENEX's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 12%. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 27% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 5.3% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we find it interesting that ENEX is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On ENEX's P/S

Its shares have lifted substantially and now ENEX's P/S is back within range of the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

To our surprise, ENEX revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't contributing to its P/S as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/S ratio. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.

You should always think about risks. Case in point, we've spotted 2 warning signs for ENEX you should be aware of.

Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.

Valuation is complex, but we're here to simplify it.
