We Wouldn't Rely On Pangrim's (KRX:003610) Statutory Earnings As A Guide
As a general rule, we think profitable companies are less risky than companies that lose money. Having said that, sometimes statutory profit levels are not a good guide to ongoing profitability, because some short term one-off factor has impacted profit levels. Today we'll focus on whether this year's statutory profits are a good guide to understanding Pangrim (KRX:003610).
While Pangrim was able to generate revenue of ₩116.5b in the last twelve months, we think its profit result of ₩4.99b was more important. The chart below shows that both revenue and profit have declined over the last three years.

Not all profits are equal, and we can learn more about the nature of a company's past profitability by diving deeper into the financial statements. This article will focus on the impact unusual items have had on Pangrim's statutory earnings. Note: we always recommend investors check balance sheet strength. How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
To properly understand Pangrim's profit results, we need to consider the ₩6.2b gain attributed to unusual items. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often not repeated the next year. Which is hardly surprising, given the name. Pangrim had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to September 2020. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.
Our Take On Pangrim's Profit Performance
As previously mentioned, Pangrim's large boost from unusual items won't be there indefinitely, so its statutory earnings are probably a poor guide to its underlying profitability. As a result, we think it may well be the case that Pangrim's underlying earnings power is lower than its statutory profit. Sadly, its EPS was down over the last twelve months. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors.
