Englewood Lab, Inc. (KOSDAQ:950140) Stock Rockets 26% As Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected
Englewood Lab, Inc. (KOSDAQ:950140) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 26% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 37% over that time.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Englewood Lab's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 11.6x is worth a mention when the median P/E in Korea is similar at about 12x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.
For instance, Englewood Lab's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the company to put the disappointing earnings performance behind them over the coming period, which has kept the P/E from falling. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the market for P/E ratios like Englewood Lab's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 13% decrease to the company's bottom line. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year EPS growth is still a noteworthy 17% in total. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 30% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
With this information, we find it interesting that Englewood Lab is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.
The Bottom Line On Englewood Lab's P/E
Its shares have lifted substantially and now Englewood Lab's P/E is also back up to the market median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Englewood Lab currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider market forecast. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/E as this earnings performance isn't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
