If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at Samsung C&T (KRX:028260) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for Samsung C&T, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.062 = ₩3.0t ÷ (₩62t - ₩14t) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).

Therefore, Samsung C&T has an ROCE of 6.2%. Even though it's in line with the industry average of 6.2%, it's still a low return by itself.

How Are Returns Trending?

We're glad to see that ROCE is heading in the right direction, even if it is still low at the moment. The data shows that returns on capital have increased substantially over the last five years to 6.2%. The amount of capital employed has increased too, by 48%. The increasing returns on a growing amount of capital is common amongst multi-baggers and that's why we're impressed.

The Bottom Line

A company that is growing its returns on capital and can consistently reinvest in itself is a highly sought after trait, and that's what Samsung C&T has. Investors may not be impressed by the favorable underlying trends yet because over the last five years the stock has only returned 21% to shareholders. So exploring more about this stock could uncover a good opportunity, if the valuation and other metrics stack up.
