Is Hyundai Elevator Co., Ltd's (KRX:017800) Recent Stock Performance Influenced By Its Financials In Any Way?
Hyundai Elevator's (KRX:017800) stock is up by 7.9% over the past three months. Given that stock prices are usually aligned with a company's financial performance in the long-term, we decided to investigate if the company's decent financials had a hand to play in the recent price move. Particularly, we will be paying attention to Hyundai Elevator's ROE today.
ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. Simply put, it is used to assess the profitability of a company in relation to its equity capital.

How Is ROE Calculated?
The formula for ROE is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Hyundai Elevator is:
9.4% = ₩93b ÷ ₩987b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).
The 'return' is the income the business earned over the last year. That means that for every ₩1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated ₩0.09 in profit.
What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?
We have already established that ROE serves as an efficient profit-generating gauge for a company's future earnings. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.
Hyundai Elevator's Earnings Growth And 9.4% ROE
At first glance, Hyundai Elevator's ROE doesn't look very promising. However, the fact that the company's ROE is higher than the average industry ROE of 4.8%, is definitely interesting. This probably goes some way in explaining Hyundai Elevator's moderate 8.2% growth over the past five years amongst other factors. That being said, the company does have a slightly low ROE to begin with, just that it is higher than the industry average. Hence there might be some other aspects that are causing earnings to grow. Such as- high earnings retention or the company belonging to a high growth industry.
Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that Hyundai Elevator's reported growth was lower than the industry growth of 11% in the same period, which is not something we like to see.
The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. By doing so, they will have an idea if the stock is headed into clear blue waters or if swampy waters await. Is Hyundai Elevator Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?
Hyundai Elevator has a healthy combination of a moderate three-year median payout ratio of 46% (or a retention ratio of 54%) and a respectable amount of growth in earnings as we saw above, meaning that the company has been making efficient use of its profits.
Moreover, Hyundai Elevator is determined to keep sharing its profits with shareholders which we infer from its long history of paying a dividend for at least ten years. Upon studying the latest analysts' consensus data, we found that the company's future payout ratio is expected to drop to 24% over the next three years. Despite the lower expected payout ratio, the company's ROE is not expected to change by much.
Summary
In total, it does look like Hyundai Elevator has some positive aspects to its business. Specifically, we like that the company is reinvesting a huge chunk of its profits at a respectable rate of return. This of course has caused the company to see a good amount of growth in its earnings. That being so, the latest analyst forecasts show that the company will continue to see an expansion in its earnings.
