There Are Reasons To Feel Uneasy About Posco Future M's (KRX:003670) Returns On Capital
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. However, after investigating Posco Future M (KRX:003670), we don't think it's current trends fit the mold of a multi-bagger.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Posco Future M:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.01 = ₩54b ÷ (₩7.0t - ₩1.9t) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
So, Posco Future M has an ROCE of 1.0%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Electrical industry average of 8.1%.

So How Is Posco Future M's ROCE Trending?
In terms of Posco Future M's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 13% over the last five years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.
In Conclusion...
In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that Posco Future M is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 382% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So should these growth trends continue, we'd be optimistic on the stock going forward.
