We think all investors should try to buy and hold high quality multi-year winners. And highest quality companies can see their share prices grow by huge amounts. Just think about the savvy investors who held Posco Future M Co., Ltd. (KRX:003670) shares for the last five years, while they gained 365%. And this is just one example of the epic gains achieved by some long term investors. In contrast, the stock has fallen 8.6% in the last 30 days. This could be related to the soft market, with stocks down around 1.8% in the last month.

Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Posco Future M actually saw its EPS drop 11% per year.

Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.

The modest 0.1% dividend yield is unlikely to be propping up the share price. In contrast revenue growth of 29% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Posco Future M is growing, a real positive. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Posco Future M the TSR over the last 5 years was 395%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

Investors in Posco Future M had a tough year, with a total loss of 2.1% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 15%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 38% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Posco Future M has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about.
