Investors Could Be Concerned With Posco Future M's (KRX:003670) Returns On Capital

If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. Although, when we looked at Posco Future M (KRX:003670), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on Posco Future M is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.0043 = ₩31b ÷ (₩9.1t - ₩1.9t) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2025).

Thus, Posco Future M has an ROCE of 0.4%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Electrical industry average of 10.0%.

In the above chart we have measured Posco Future M's prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you're interested, you can view the analysts predictions in our free analyst report for Posco Future M .

So How Is Posco Future M's ROCE Trending?

We weren't thrilled with the trend because Posco Future M's ROCE has reduced by 87% over the last five years, while the business employed 286% more capital. Usually this isn't ideal, but given Posco Future M conducted a capital raising before their most recent earnings announcement, that would've likely contributed, at least partially, to the increased capital employed figure. It's unlikely that all of the funds raised have been put to work yet, so as a consequence Posco Future M might not have received a full period of earnings contribution from it.

On a side note, Posco Future M's current liabilities have increased over the last five years to 20% of total assets, effectively distorting the ROCE to some degree. If current liabilities hadn't increased as much as they did, the ROCE could actually be even lower. Keep an eye on this ratio, because the business could encounter some new risks if this metric gets too high.

The Bottom Line

From the above analysis, we find it rather worrisome that returns on capital and sales for Posco Future M have fallen, meanwhile the business is employing more capital than it was five years ago. The market must be rosy on the stock's future because even though the underlying trends aren't too encouraging, the stock has soared 136%. In any case, the current underlying trends don't bode well for long term performance so unless they reverse, we'd start looking elsewhere.

Since virtually every company faces some risks, it's worth knowing what they are, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Posco Future M (of which 1 shouldn't be ignored!) that you should know about.
