A Piece Of The Puzzle Missing From LG Corp.'s (KRX:003550) Share Price
There wouldn't be many who think LG Corp.'s (KRX:003550) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 12.7x is worth a mention when the median P/E in Korea is similar at about 11x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.
LG could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/E from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think LG's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.Does Growth Match The P/E?
The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/E like LG's is when the company's growth is tracking the market closely.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 11% decrease to the company's bottom line. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 50% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the ten analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 48% over the next year. With the market only predicted to deliver 32%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we find it interesting that LG is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.
The Bottom Line On LG's P/E
We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that LG currently trades on a lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. There could be some unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears some are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
