It's Down 28% But ONEJOON Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:382840) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks

ONEJOON Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:382840) shares have retraced a considerable 28% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 31% in that time.

Although its price has dipped substantially, it's still not a stretch to say that ONEJOON's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 8.7x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the market in Korea, where the median P/E ratio is around 10x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

Recent times have been quite advantageous for ONEJOON as its earnings have been rising very briskly. The P/E is probably moderate because investors think this strong earnings growth might not be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Is There Some Growth For ONEJOON?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/E like ONEJOON's is when the company's growth is tracking the market closely.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 358%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 273% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Comparing that to the market, which is only predicted to deliver 26% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.

With this information, we find it interesting that ONEJOON is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Bottom Line On ONEJOON's P/E

Following ONEJOON's share price tumble, its P/E is now hanging on to the median market P/E. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that ONEJOON currently trades on a lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider market forecast. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears some are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
