Examining Cashflow Against mPLUS' Earnings
As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.
Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
mPLUS has an accrual ratio of -0.95 for the year to December 2023. That implies it has very good cash conversion, and that its earnings in the last year actually significantly understate its free cash flow. To wit, it produced free cash flow of ₩99b during the period, dwarfing its reported profit of ₩20.0b. Given that mPLUS had negative free cash flow in the prior corresponding period, the trailing twelve month resul of ₩99b would seem to be a step in the right direction.

Our Take On mPLUS' Profit Performance
As we discussed above, mPLUS' accrual ratio indicates strong conversion of profit to free cash flow, which is a positive for the company. Because of this, we think mPLUS' underlying earnings potential is as good as, or possibly even better, than the statutory profit makes it seem! And one can definitely find a positive in the fact that it made a profit this year, despite losing money last year. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly.
