Does Paratech (KOSDAQ:033540) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?
Some say volatility, rather than debt, is the best way to think about risk as an investor, but Warren Buffett famously said that 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. As with many other companies Paratech Company Limited (KOSDAQ:033540) makes use of debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
What Risk Does Debt Bring?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

What Is Paratech's Debt?
As you can see below, Paratech had ₩48.4b of debt at September 2024, down from ₩65.9b a year prior. On the flip side, it has ₩16.2b in cash leading to net debt of about ₩32.1b.
A Look At Paratech's Liabilities
We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Paratech had liabilities of ₩75.0b falling due within a year, and liabilities of ₩33.4b due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had ₩16.2b in cash and ₩41.8b in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by ₩50.4b.
This is a mountain of leverage relative to its market capitalization of ₩60.1b. Should its lenders demand that it shore up the balance sheet, shareholders would likely face severe dilution. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is Paratech's earnings that will influence how the balance sheet holds up in the future. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.
Over 12 months, Paratech reported revenue of ₩269b, which is a gain of 19%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. That rate of growth is a bit slow for our taste, but it takes all types to make a world.
Caveat Emptor
Importantly, Paratech had an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss over the last year. Indeed, it lost a very considerable ₩7.9b at the EBIT level. When we look at that and recall the liabilities on its balance sheet, relative to cash, it seems unwise to us for the company to have any debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. We would feel better if it turned its trailing twelve month loss of ₩8.0b into a profit. So we do think this stock is quite risky. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. To that end, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Paratech (including 1 which is a bit concerning) .
When all is said and done, sometimes its easier to focus on companies that don't even need debt. Readers can access a list of growth stocks with zero net debt 100% free, right now.
