SL Corporation (KRX:005850) Stock Catapults 27% Though Its Price And Business Still Lag The Market
SL Corporation (KRX:005850) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 27% share price jump in the last month. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 47% in the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, given about half the companies in Korea have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 14x, you may still consider SL as a highly attractive investment with its 6.4x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, SL's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For SL?
SL's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 15% decrease to the company's bottom line. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 149% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the eight analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 10% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 37%, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we can see why SL is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Final Word
SL's recent share price jump still sees its P/E sitting firmly flat on the ground. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that SL maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
