Positive earnings growth hasn't been enough to get YOUNGHWA TECH (KOSDAQ:265560) shareholders a favorable return over the last three years
This week we saw the YOUNGHWA TECH Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:265560) share price climb by 12%. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been disappointing. In that time, the share price dropped 57%. So it is really good to see an improvement. The rise has some hopeful, but turnarounds are often precarious.
Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last three years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the unfortunate three years of share price decline, YOUNGHWA TECH actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 66% per year. This is quite a puzzle, and suggests there might be something temporarily buoying the share price. Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.
It's worth taking a look at other metrics, because the EPS growth doesn't seem to match with the falling share price.
The modest 1.1% dividend yield is unlikely to be guiding the market view of the stock. We note that, in three years, revenue has actually grown at a 26% annual rate, so that doesn't seem to be a reason to sell shares. It's probably worth investigating YOUNGHWA TECH further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective
We regret to report that YOUNGHWA TECH shareholders are down 31% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 4.0%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 8%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
