Nippon Gas' (TSE:8174) Dividend Will Be ¥51.50

Simply Wall St

The board of Nippon Gas Co., Ltd. (TSE:8174) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥51.50 per share on the 26th of June. This makes the dividend yield 3.5%, which is above the industry average.

Estimates Indicate Nippon Gas' Could Struggle to Maintain Dividend Payments In The Future

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Before this announcement, Nippon Gas was paying out 80% of earnings, but a comparatively small 60% of free cash flows. Since the dividend is just paying out cash to shareholders, we care more about the cash payout ratio from which we can see plenty is being left over for reinvestment in the business.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 7.5%. However, if the dividend continues along recent trends, it could start putting pressure on the balance sheet with the payout ratio reaching 95% over the next year.

Dividend Volatility

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥8.67 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥103.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 28% a year over that time. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.

Nippon Gas Might Find It Hard To Grow Its Dividend

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Nippon Gas has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 13% per annum. The payout ratio is very much on the higher end, which could mean that the growth rate will slow down in the future, and that could flow through to the dividend as well.

In Summary

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Nippon Gas will make a great income stock. The company is generating plenty of cash, which could maintain the dividend for a while, but the track record hasn't been great. We don't think Nippon Gas is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
