U-NEXT HOLDINGSLtd (TSE:9418) jumps 3.4% this week, though earnings growth is still tracking behind five-year shareholder returns
For many, the main point of investing in the stock market is to achieve spectacular returns. And we've seen some truly amazing gains over the years. For example, the U-NEXT HOLDINGS Co.,Ltd. (TSE:9418) share price is up a whopping 423% in the last half decade, a handsome return for long term holders. And this is just one example of the epic gains achieved by some long term investors. On top of that, the share price is up 24% in about a quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 11% in 90 days).
The past week has proven to be lucrative for U-NEXT HOLDINGSLtd investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's five-year performance.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During five years of share price growth, U-NEXT HOLDINGSLtd achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 19% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 39% average annual increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of U-NEXT HOLDINGSLtd, it has a TSR of 443% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that U-NEXT HOLDINGSLtd shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 61% over the last year. That's including the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 40%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity.
