FreeBit Co., Ltd. (TSE:3843) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 11th of July to ¥30.00. This makes the dividend yield about the same as the industry average at 2.2%.

FreeBit's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. However, FreeBit's earnings easily cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 6.8% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 18% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

FreeBit Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ¥7.00 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of ¥30.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 16% over that duration. So, dividends have been growing pretty quickly, and even more impressively, they haven't experienced any notable falls during this period.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. FreeBit has impressed us by growing EPS at 111% per year over the past five years. A low payout ratio gives the company a lot of flexibility, and growing earnings also make it very easy for it to grow the dividend.

We Really Like FreeBit's Dividend

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that FreeBit is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
