If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out Santec (TYO:6777) Before It's Too Late

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Santec (TYO:6777). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is Santec Growing?

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. Over the last three years, Santec has grown EPS by 5.6% per year. That might not be particularly high growth, but it does show that per-share earnings are moving steadily in the right direction.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that Santec is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 2.9 percentage points to 19%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Since Santec is no giant, with a market capitalization of JP¥21b, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are Santec Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. So it is good to see that Santec insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Given insiders own a small fortune of shares, currently valued at JP¥6.2b, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. At 29% of the company, the co-investment by insiders gives me confidence that management will make long-term focussed decisions.

Should You Add Santec To Your Watchlist?

As I already mentioned, Santec is a growing business, which is what I like to see. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. We should say that we've discovered 1 warning sign for Santec that you should be aware of before investing here.
