Take Care Before Jumping Onto Howtelevision, Inc. (TSE:7064) Even Though It's 28% Cheaper
Howtelevision, Inc. (TSE:7064) shares have had a horrible month, losing 28% after a relatively good period beforehand. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 37% in that time.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, Howtelevision may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 9.2x, since almost half of all companies in Japan have P/E ratios greater than 14x and even P/E's higher than 21x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Howtelevision has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Howtelevision's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 33% gain to the company's bottom line. Although, its longer-term performance hasn't been as strong with three-year EPS growth being relatively non-existent overall. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the sole analyst covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 13% per year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 9.6% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we find it odd that Howtelevision is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.
The Final Word
Howtelevision's P/E has taken a tumble along with its share price. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that Howtelevision currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
