The board of SERAKU Co., Ltd. (TSE:6199) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ¥13.00 on the 25th of November, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 1.1%.

SERAKU's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Before making this announcement, SERAKU was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 35.0% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 12%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

SERAKU Doesn't Have A Long Payment History

It is great to see that SERAKU has been paying a stable dividend for a number of years now, however we want to be a bit cautious about whether this will remain true through a full economic cycle. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ¥3.20 in 2018 to the most recent total annual payment of ¥13.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 26% over that duration. The dividend has been growing rapidly, however with such a short payment history we can't know for sure if payment can continue to grow over the long term, so caution may be warranted.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. SERAKU has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 30% per annum. Rapid earnings growth and a low payout ratio suggest this company has been effectively reinvesting in its business. Should that continue, this company could have a bright future.

We Really Like SERAKU's Dividend

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that SERAKU is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
