Remixpoint, Inc. (TSE:3825) Soars 30% But It's A Story Of Risk Vs Reward
Remixpoint, Inc. (TSE:3825) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 30% after a shaky period beforehand. The bad news is that even after the stocks recovery in the last 30 days, shareholders are still underwater by about 3.3% over the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Remixpoint's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.2x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Japan's IT industry is similar at about 1.1x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

What Does Remixpoint's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Remixpoint over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps investors believe the recent revenue performance is enough to keep in line with the industry, which is keeping the P/S from dropping off. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Remixpoint's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 33%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 34% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 6.7% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
In light of this, it's curious that Remixpoint's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
What Does Remixpoint's P/S Mean For Investors?
Its shares have lifted substantially and now Remixpoint's P/S is back within range of the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
To our surprise, Remixpoint revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't contributing to its P/S as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. It'd be fair to assume that potential risks the company faces could be the contributing factor to the lower than expected P/S. While recent revenue trends over the past medium-term suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to see the likelihood of revenue fluctuations in the future.
Having said that, be aware Remixpoint is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is a bit concerning.
