Paltac's (TSE:8283) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's

Simply Wall St

Paltac Corporation (TSE:8283) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 2nd of June to ¥63.00. This will take the annual payment to 2.7% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Paltac's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. However, Paltac's earnings easily cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 4.6% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 32% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Paltac Is Still Building Its Track Record

The dividend's track record has been pretty solid, but with only 5 years of history we want to see a few more years of history before making any solid conclusions. The annual payment during the last 5 years was ¥78.00 in 2020, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥126.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 10% a year over that time. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. However, Paltac's EPS was effectively flat over the past five years, which could stop the company from paying more every year. While growth may be thin on the ground, Paltac could always pay out a higher proportion of earnings to increase shareholder returns.

Our Thoughts On Paltac's Dividend

Overall, it's great to see the dividend being raised and that it is still in a sustainable range. The payout ratio looks good, but unfortunately the company's dividend track record isn't stellar. The dividend looks okay, but there have been some issues in the past, so we would be a little bit cautious.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. Earnings growth generally bodes well for the future value of company dividend payments.
