For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.
If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in USS (TSE:4732). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide USS with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

USS' Improving Profits
USS has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. USS' EPS has risen over the last 12 months, growing from JP¥64.89 to JP¥72.70. That's a 12% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.
Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. The music to the ears of USS shareholders is that EBIT margins have grown from 49% to 51% in the last 12 months and revenues are on an upwards trend as well. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are USS Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
It's pleasing to see company leaders with putting their money on the line, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. Shareholders will be pleased by the fact that insiders own USS shares worth a considerable sum. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth JP¥68b. Holders should find this level of insider commitment quite encouraging, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience their success, or failure, with the stock.
Is USS Worth Keeping An Eye On?
As previously touched on, USS is a growing business, which is encouraging. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. That combination is very appealing. So yes, we do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. Of course, identifying quality businesses is only half the battle; investors need to know whether the stock is undervalued. So you might want to consider this free discounted cashflow valuation of USS.
