Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On LANDNET Inc. (TSE:2991) Even After 31% Share Price Boost
Despite an already strong run, LANDNET Inc. (TSE:2991) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 31% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 95% in the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, LANDNET may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 6.6x, since almost half of all companies in Japan have P/E ratios greater than 14x and even P/E's higher than 22x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.
Recent times have been quite advantageous for LANDNET as its earnings have been rising very briskly. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as LANDNET's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 272% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 90% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Comparing that to the market, which is only predicted to deliver 11% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
In light of this, it's peculiar that LANDNET's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Key Takeaway
Even after such a strong price move, LANDNET's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
Our examination of LANDNET revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
Don't forget that there may be other risks. For instance, we've identified 4 warning signs for LANDNET (2 are potentially serious) you should be aware of.
