Investors Appear Satisfied With SRE Holdings Corporation's (TSE:2980) Prospects As Shares Rocket 27%
The SRE Holdings Corporation (TSE:2980) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 27%. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 4.4% isn't as attractive.
Since its price has surged higher, SRE Holdings' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 43.6x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Japan, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 14x and even P/E's below 9x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
SRE Holdings certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like SRE Holdings' to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 23% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 176% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 31% each year during the coming three years according to the three analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 9.9% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that SRE Holdings' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From SRE Holdings' P/E?
SRE Holdings' P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of SRE Holdings' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
