Take Care Before Jumping Onto Karadanote, Inc. (TSE:4014) Even Though It's 28% Cheaper
Karadanote, Inc. (TSE:4014) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 28% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 14% in that time.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Karadanote's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.3x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Japan's Interactive Media and Services industry is similar at about 1.6x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has Karadanote Performed Recently?
We'd have to say that with no tangible growth over the last year, Karadanote's revenue has been unimpressive. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to only match most other companies at best over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from rising. If not, then existing shareholders may be feeling hopeful about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Karadanote would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's top line as the year before. However, a few strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 127% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been great for the company, but investors will want to ask why it has slowed to such an extent.
Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 9.0% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
With this information, we find it interesting that Karadanote is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
What Does Karadanote's P/S Mean For Investors?
Following Karadanote's share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
To our surprise, Karadanote revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't contributing to its P/S as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. There could be some unobserved threats to revenue preventing the P/S ratio from matching this positive performance. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for Karadanote that you need to be mindful of.
