There wouldn't be many who think Media Kobo, Inc.'s (TSE:3815) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.2x is worth a mention when the median P/S for the Entertainment industry in Japan is very similar. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Media Kobo Has Been Performing

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Media Kobo over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps investors believe the recent revenue performance is enough to keep in line with the industry, which is keeping the P/S from dropping off. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Media Kobo?

Media Kobo's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 2.5%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 16% in total. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to decline by 0.5% over the next year, which puts the company's recent medium-term positive growth rates in a good light for now.

With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Media Kobo's P/S matches its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Media Kobo's P/S

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of Media Kobo revealed its growing revenue over the medium-term hasn't helped elevate its P/S above that of the industry, which is surprising given the industry is set to shrink. When we see a history of positive growth in a struggling industry, but only an average P/S, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/S ratio. One major risk is whether its revenue trajectory can keep outperforming under these tough industry conditions. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because this relative performance should normally provide a boost to the share price.
