A Piece Of The Puzzle Missing From PIXTA Inc.'s (TSE:3416) 29% Share Price Climb
PIXTA Inc. (TSE:3416) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 29% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 53% in the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, given about half the companies in Japan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 14x, you may still consider PIXTA as a highly attractive investment with its 6.3x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.
With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, PIXTA has been doing very well. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on PIXTA's earnings, revenue and cash flow. What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?
PIXTA's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 75% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 340% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 12% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.
In light of this, it's peculiar that PIXTA's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
The Final Word
Even after such a strong price move, PIXTA's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Our examination of PIXTA revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
