A Piece Of The Puzzle Missing From Landix Inc.'s (TSE:2981) 25% Share Price Climb
Landix Inc. (TSE:2981) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 25% share price jump in the last month. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 48%.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Landix may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 7.1x, since almost half of all companies in Japan have P/E ratios greater than 13x and even P/E's higher than 21x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, Landix has been doing very well. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Landix's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 78% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 49% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Comparing that to the market, which is only predicted to deliver 9.1% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
With this information, we find it odd that Landix is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Bottom Line On Landix's P/E
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Landix's P/E close to the market median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Landix revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
