FAN Communications Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. At the time of the last dividend payment, FAN Communications was paying out a very large proportion of what it was earning and 137% of cash flows. Paying out such a high proportion of cash flows can expose the business to needing to cut the dividend if the business runs into some challenges.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to fall by 9.9% over the next year. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 102%, which is definitely a bit high to be sustainable going forward.
FAN Communications Has A Solid Track Record
Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was ¥5.50, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥19.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 13% a year over that time. Rapidly growing dividends for a long time is a very valuable feature for an income stock.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Come By
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. Let's not jump to conclusions as things might not be as good as they appear on the surface. Over the past five years, it looks as though FAN Communications' EPS has declined at around 5.5% a year. A modest decline in earnings isn't great, and it makes it quite unlikely that the dividend will grow in the future unless that trend can be reversed.
FAN Communications' Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
In summary, while it's good to see that the dividend hasn't been cut, we are a bit cautious about FAN Communications' payments, as there could be some issues with sustaining them into the future. We can't deny that the payments have been very stable, but we are a little bit worried about the very high payout ratio. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
