Valqua, Ltd. (TSE:7995) Stock's Been Sliding But Fundamentals Look Decent: Will The Market Correct The Share Price In The Future?
Valqua (TSE:7995) has had a rough week with its share price down 12%. However, the company's fundamentals look pretty decent, and long-term financials are usually aligned with future market price movements. Specifically, we decided to study Valqua's ROE in this article.
Return on Equity or ROE is a test of how effectively a company is growing its value and managing investors’ money. In short, ROE shows the profit each dollar generates with respect to its shareholder investments.
How To Calculate Return On Equity?
The formula for return on equity is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Valqua is:
7.8% = JP¥3.8b ÷ JP¥49b (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).
The 'return' is the income the business earned over the last year. So, this means that for every ¥1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of ¥0.08.

What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?
So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.
Valqua's Earnings Growth And 7.8% ROE
At first glance, Valqua's ROE doesn't look very promising. Yet, a closer study shows that the company's ROE is similar to the industry average of 7.2%. Even so, Valqua has shown a fairly decent growth in its net income which grew at a rate of 13%. Given the slightly low ROE, it is likely that there could be some other aspects that are driving this growth. For instance, the company has a low payout ratio or is being managed efficiently.
We then compared Valqua's net income growth with the industry and we're pleased to see that the company's growth figure is higher when compared with the industry which has a growth rate of 9.3% in the same 5-year period.
The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. By doing so, they will have an idea if the stock is headed into clear blue waters or if swampy waters await. One good indicator of expected earnings growth is the P/E ratio which determines the price the market is willing to pay for a stock based on its earnings prospects. So, you may want to check if Valqua is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E , relative to its industry.
Is Valqua Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
Valqua has a healthy combination of a moderate three-year median payout ratio of 42% (or a retention ratio of 58%) and a respectable amount of growth in earnings as we saw above, meaning that the company has been making efficient use of its profits.
Additionally, Valqua has paid dividends over a period of at least ten years which means that the company is pretty serious about sharing its profits with shareholders.
Conclusion
On the whole, we do feel that Valqua has some positive attributes. Despite its low rate of return, the fact that the company reinvests a very high portion of its profits into its business, no doubt contributed to its high earnings growth. Having said that, looking at the current analyst estimates, we found that the company's earnings are expected to gain momentum.
