Mino Ceramic's (TSE:5356) 21% CAGR outpaced the company's earnings growth over the same five-year period
When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. For example, the Mino Ceramic Co., Ltd. (TSE:5356) share price has soared 112% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. In more good news, the share price has risen 14% in thirty days. But the price may well have benefitted from a buoyant market, since stocks have gained 11% in the last thirty days.
The past week has proven to be lucrative for Mino Ceramic investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's five-year performance.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During five years of share price growth, Mino Ceramic achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 4.1% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 16% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Mino Ceramic's TSR for the last 5 years was 159%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Mino Ceramic has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 16% in the last twelve months. Of course, that includes the dividend. However, that falls short of the 21% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
