Nitta Gelatin's Distributions May Be Difficult To Sustain
Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. Nitta Gelatin is not generating a profit, but its free cash flows easily cover the dividend, leaving plenty for reinvestment in the business. In general, cash flows are more important than the more traditional measures of profit so we feel pretty comfortable with the dividend at this level.
Analysts are expecting EPS to grow by 64.3% over the next 12 months. We like to see the company moving towards profitability, but this probably won't be enough for it to post positive net income this year. The positive free cash flows give us some comfort, however, that the dividend could continue to be sustained.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was ¥12.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥17.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 3.5% over that duration. Modest growth in the dividend is good to see, but we think this is offset by historical cuts to the payments. It is hard to live on a dividend income if the company's earnings are not consistent.
Dividend Growth Is Doubtful
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Nitta Gelatin has seen earnings per share falling at 8.5% per year over the last five years. If earnings continue declining, the company may have to make the difficult choice of reducing the dividend or even stopping it completely - the opposite of dividend growth. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this can turn into a longer term trend.
Nitta Gelatin's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Nitta Gelatin will make a great income stock. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
