Air Water's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Before making this announcement, Air Water was paying a whopping 1,061% as a dividend, but this only made up 29% of its overall earnings. The business might be trying to strike a balance between returning cash to shareholders and reinvesting back into the business, but this high of a payout ratio could definitely force the dividend to be cut if the company runs into a bit of a tough spot.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 9.0% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 30%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Air Water Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥24.00 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥60.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 9.6% per annum over that time. Companies like this can be very valuable over the long term, if the decent rate of growth can be maintained.

Air Water Could Grow Its Dividend

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. It's encouraging to see that Air Water has been growing its earnings per share at 8.9% a year over the past five years. With a decent amount of growth and a low payout ratio, we think this bodes well for Air Water's prospects of growing its dividend payments in the future.

In Summary

In summary, dividends being cut isn't ideal, however it can bring the payment into a more sustainable range. While Air Water is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
